Following historic wildfires across Oklahoma, state lawmakers are paying closer attention to legislative effort to prevent future wildfires. But the department, which manages the state’s wildland wildfire efforts, is currently slotted to take a 40% budget cut for the next fiscal year.

Senate Bill 1196 would have allowed exemptions for two agency directors to also serve on the governor's cabinet at the same time. The bill came after an opinion by the Attorney General last month that said dual-office-holding is unconstitutional. Gov. Stitt vetoed the bill, saying that it duplicated existing law.
